Barn 4 at Mahoning Valley Race Course will be quarantined for a minimum of 14 additional days following a positive test for Strangles of an unraced 2-year-old Wednesday afternoon. All 70 horses in the barn were swabbed Tuesday and were tested by the Ohio Department of Agriculture lab and that was the only positive.

The horse which tested positive and three other horses which have shown symptoms in barn 4 will be removed from the grounds and relocated to private farms.

Beginning Friday, November 29th training hours will be altered as follows;
General population training hours 7am to 9:15am
Break 9:15am to 9:45am
Barn 4 training hours 9:45am to 10:30am
Starting gate hours 8am to 9:15am

The stable gate remains open for horses shipping in or out of Mahoning Valley.

On October 28, the Ohio HBPA and Penn Entertainment executed a 4-racing season contract extension for Mahoning Valley Race Course.

The contract extension maintains all of the previous provisions in the 2014 ten-year agreement between the parties and runs through April 30, 2028.

Bobby Cline, Tim Hamm and Kim Puhl have been elected to a 4-year-term and Mark Doering will serve as the trainer/owner-trainer alternate for the next two years.

Jeff Jarvis, Doug Shanyfelt and Christina Estvanko have been elected to a 4-year-term and Kristina Tumblin will serve as the alternate in the owner category.

HBPA – 2024 Election

There will be a stall list out by September 23rd for the meet. The barn area will be open to set up stalls on October 4th. Horses will be allowed to ship in beginning Saturday, October 5th. Training will begin October 6th and the first day of the live meet is Saturday, October 19th.

Below is the sales catalog for the Buckeye Classic Thoroughbred Sale which will take place on Thursday, October 17th beginning at 2pm at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.

Due to forecasted high temperatures Belterra Park has moved post time forward to 11:15am this Wednesday through Friday August 28th through August 30th.

Due to an error made by our printing company a very small number (we are aware of 4 out of nearly 1,600 packets mailed) of the election booklets sent out in the first mailing were incorrect and did not contain all of the candidates biographical statements.
While it is unlikely that this error would have impacted the outcome of the election in order to be completely transparent and fair the Ohio HBPA board of directors has elected to send out new election packets to all members to rectify this situation.
Please note that regardless of whether you have mailed the previous ballot you received in, or not, you will need to complete the new blue ballot contained in this packet and return it in order to have your vote counted. Follow the instructions on the inside cover of the election booklet to mail your ballot. Also, please note the new date of Friday, September 27th, 2024 by which the ballots must reach our independent accounting firm Hirth, Norris and Garrison LLP in order to be counted.
The new election packets are expected to be mailed on approximately August 16th and members should receive them no later than August 24th.

Ballots have been mailed for the 2024 Ohio HBPA board of directors election. If you are a member and do not receive a ballot by August 10 please contact Ohio HBPA administrative assistant Diane Sexton at 614/-875-1269 and provide her with your address and OSRC license number and a ballot will be mailed to you.

Ballots must be returned in the postage paid envelopes to Ohio HBPA accounting firm Hirth, Norris and Garrison LLP no later than Friday, September 6, 2024.

The Ohio TB Broodmare/ renewal deadline is approaching (MUST BE POSTMARKED BY 8/15/2024).

This is the biggest deadline we have due to the fact foals lose their accreditation status as well as the mare being subject to the breed back clause if it is not submitted on time.
